Whether you are a UK Expatriate or you are back living in Australia having spent time working in the UK, you may be wondering how you can transfer your UK Pension Plan to a similar arrangement in Australia.
In this guide, we will cover the most commonly asked questions we receive from individuals seeking to transfer their UK Pension to Australia.
Yes, you may be able to transfer eligible UK pension savings to the Australian Expatriate Superannuation Fund (AESF), subject to UK and Australian rules, your pension scheme’s requirements and Trustee approval.
AESF provides a straightforward way to bring eligible UK pension savings to Australia. Eligibility, tax treatment and any Overseas Transfer Charge will depend on your personal circumstances, so speak with our team to find out whether you can apply.
A Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) is an overseas pension scheme that has confirmed to HMRC that it meets specified UK requirements.
AESF operates within the Tidswell Master Superannuation Plan, which currently appears on HMRC’s recognised overseas pension schemes list, allowing it to receive eligible UK pension transfers. HMRC listing does not represent approval or endorsement, and all transfers remain subject to eligibility requirements and Trustee approval.
A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) and a retail superannuation fund can both help you save for retirement, but they operate differently. Read our guide to SMSFs vs Retail Superannuation for a more detailed comparison.
With an SMSF, the members are generally also the trustees and are responsible for managing the fund and meeting its legal, tax and reporting obligations. You can learn more in our guide: What is an SMSF?
The Australian Expatriate Superannuation Fund offers a retail superannuation alternative where the Trustee and appointed service providers oversee the fund’s administration and compliance. This may appeal to members who want to transfer eligible UK pension savings without establishing and operating their own SMSF.
Transferring eligible UK pension savings to Australia may make it easier to manage your retirement savings alongside your Australian superannuation.
Potential benefits may include consolidating eligible UK pensions, accessing a broad range of investment options through the Praemium platform and managing your retirement savings within Australia’s regulated superannuation system. Australian super may also provide flexible retirement benefit options once you satisfy the applicable conditions of release.
The benefits will depend on your circumstances, including tax, fees, exchange rates and any valuable benefits or guarantees you may give up. Consider obtaining financial and tax advice before transferring.
You may be able to transfer eligible UK personal pensions, defined contribution pensions and some funded occupational pension schemes to Australia. Certain defined benefit pensions may also be transferable, subject to the UK scheme’s rules and applicable financial advice requirements.
The UK State Pension cannot be transferred. Transfers from unfunded UK public-sector pension schemes, including many NHS, teachers, police, firefighters, Civil Service and Armed Forces schemes, are also generally prohibited.
Every pension scheme is different. Contact our team and we can help you identify whether your UK pension may be eligible for transfer to AESF.
The following AESF fees apply when transferring your UK pension:
- Establishment fee – AUD $595
- Transfer-in fee – AUD $195 per transfer
Your UK pension provider, financial adviser or foreign exchange provider may charge additional fees. UK taxes, including the Overseas Transfer Charge, may also apply depending on your circumstances.
Please review the current Product Disclosure Statement, Member Guide and Investment Guide for full details of AESF’s fees and costs.
A transfer from a UK pension scheme to an Australian superannuation fund can have Australian and UK tax consequences.
The Australian tax treatment depends on your circumstances, including when you became an Australian tax resident, the date and value of the transfer, the amount of any applicable fund earnings and whether a valid election is made for the receiving Australian superannuation fund to pay tax.
Part of the transfer may count towards your non-concessional contributions cap. For 2026–27, the general non-concessional contributions cap is $130,000. Eligible individuals may be able to contribute up to $390,000 under the bring-forward arrangement, depending on their age, total superannuation balance and previous contribution history.
The amount that can be accepted is not determined by the transfer value alone. Australian contribution rules, AESF acceptance requirements and the tax treatment of applicable fund earnings must also be considered.
UK tax charges or reporting requirements may continue to apply after the transfer. You should obtain advice from appropriately qualified Australian and UK tax advisers before deciding whether to transfer.
This removes the obsolete $360,000 limit and the outdated reference to an automatic 45% excess-contributions charge.
Financial advice is not compulsory for every UK pension transfer, although it can help you understand the tax, investment and retirement implications.
If your UK pension contains safeguarded benefits, such as a defined benefit or final salary pension, valued above £30,000, UK law generally requires you to obtain appropriate independent advice from an FCA-authorised pension transfer adviser before transferring.
Your UK pension provider may also have its own advice requirements. Our team can explain the AESF application process, but we cannot provide personal financial advice.
